searching for a book

Hi all!

I've joined this tribe in the hope that you can help me out. I read a book around 10 years ago when I was travelling and have never found a copy since, don't know the author, the title or the ISBN....(I know, tough to find it again!)

What I do know is that it was published by Bloomsbury Press, may have been written in the early eighties as it was set in the earlyish eighties... The author was British (?) as the story was set in the UK and there was a definite British feel to the writing and humour...

The plot is about the members of a community/village who are forbidden to leave by the domineering Police Sargeant who has a hold over the village.

The hero (named Moses) is placed in a basket and sent down a stream/river when a baby as his parents don't want him to grow up in the village and never be able to leave.

Fate has its way and when this young man is grown up he falls in love, and his love affair is the key to him discovering his past and his family and the village he unknowingly escaped from. The village is possibly called Little Egypt...

It's a fab story with some wonderful imagery, not least I remember the description of a villager who disappeared after disguising himself as a ploughed field in order to escape (the disappearance was not due to him leaving the village...)

That's all I can remember. If anyone can help me out I'll be very grateful - and if there are other tribes where I could post this request I'd be grateful to know them too!

Many thanks, Deb.
